What do you know about the month of August?  Besides, it’s HOT outside.

Did You Know?

August comes from the Latin word augustus, meaning “consecrated” or “venerable,” which in turn is related to the Latin augur, meaning “consecrated by augury or “auspicious.” In 8 B.C. the Roman Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month “Sextilis” to “Augustus.” Middle English speakers inherited the name of the month of August, but it wasn’t until the mid-1600s that “august” came to be used generically in English, more or less as “augustus” was in Latin, to refer to someone with imperial qualities.https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/august#:~:text=Did%20you%20know%3F-,August%20comes%20from%20the%20Latin%20word%20augustus%2C%20meaning%20%22consecrated%22,their%20month%20Sextilis%20to%20Augustus.

August is called the Dog Days not because of any real dogs or because it’s hot.  It’s because of the Dog Star Sirius that rose at the same time as sunrise during Roman times.
