Over the years, our country artists have provided us with some excellent and memorable songs for Easter Week. Here are some that we hope you will remember, or hear for the first time, on this Good Friday 2020.

John Williams and I were talking about songs surrounding the Easter season. He shared with me that he used to lay down at night with his children to help them sleep. JW would play Elvis Presley’s gospel albums, ‘How Great Thou Art’, in particular. For you, J-Dub.

Many of us may remember the days of watching the Saturday, thirty-minute long country music shows from Nashville, Tennessee. One of those shows was the Wilburn Brothers. Teddy and Doyle added Loretta Lynn to the program as their ‘girl singer’. Here is an unforgettable performance by the Coal Miner’s Daughter.

Our Doug Davis came by the station. I asked him what his favorite Easter hymn was. He told me that he loves ‘The Church’s One Foundation” and ‘The Old Rugged Cross.” I didn’t find Ferlin Husky, but I hope that you and he both will like Alan Jackson’s take on the latter, on one of the Gaither Homecoming shows.

Governor Jimmie Davis was not only a Louisiana Hayride favorite, he was the Governor of the Pelican State. He served from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964. He remains a Louisiana icon. Best known for ‘You Are My Sunshine’, his performance of ‘The Three Nails’ is wonderful.

George Strait makes the meaning of Good Friday even more personal, with ‘Three Nails and a Cross.’

And now…my personal favorite. When I need uplifting, I go no further than Dolly Parton.
