Happy Cinco de Mayo to Caroline

May 5th is one of my favorite days of the year, and not only for celebrating with good Mexican food.

Cinco de Mayo is also my sister of the heart, Caroline Harkness’ birthday.

Caroline and first met when we worked together at KWKH in Shreveport. She was hired, master’s degree in communications from NLU in Monroe in hand.  She is proud to say that her radio air shift followed that of the late Frank Page, every midday. It didn’t take long until we were fast friends.

Then I met her wonderful parents, Preacher and Jean Harkness. Preacher was a fiddle player for Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Jean is and was, a beautiful woman, who ended up being ‘Mamaw Jean’ to both of my children.

Caroline has been in radio, has written the textbook and taught travel sales for a corporation. She has managed the customer service phone bank for an upscale hardware/furniture business, and more. She is a fantastic singer who traveled and sang backup vocals for Mila Mason. She plays bass, drums, piano, and a touch of fiddle, too. She has done everything, from singing backup in studio, to wrapping the perfect Christmas gift, to playing some basketball, singing/playing jazz, acting, waiting tables, and starring in a production of “My Fair Lady”. In short, there is not much that Caroline cannot accomplish. She is “Aunt Caroline” to the kids; “Mama” to her two dogs Bailey and Jack.

Since Caroline and Jean live far away from us now, we don’t see each other as we would like. So this blog is my Birthday Card for her, wishing her a very Happy Birthday. I love you, Sister! I guess enchiladas and a ‘rita are in order, from Texas to Ohio.
