Today is May 1st. Other than ‘time is marching on’, and ‘some of the shelter-in-place orders are expired, yay!’, just what IS May Day?

According to almanac.com

May Day, in medieval and modern Europe, holiday (May 1) for the celebration of the return of spring. The observance probably originated in ancient agricultural rituals, and the Greeks and Romans held such festivals.

Traditional English May Day rites and celebrations include crowning a May Queen and celebrations involving a maypole, around which dancers often circle with ribbons. Historically, Morris dancing has been linked to May Day celebrations.

Morris dancing? That’s a new one to us. We will leave that one alone, and give some more practical things to do to celebrate today, with your kids, such as:

  • Make a May Day flower crown. …
  • Give a May Day flower basket. …
  • Plant some spring flowers. …
  • Dance around a Maypole. …
  • Enjoy a May Day picnic. …
  • Build a May Day bonfire. …
  • Do a May Day dance.
  • Most of our community are celebrating, by being out and about on the roads and in the stores and restaurants, on the Texas side, at least. Enjoy May Day, but please, don’t run into each other, and check yourself on that social distancing thing. It’s still an actual ‘thing.’ Happy May Day!
