September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day in the U.S. We should celebrate all things cheeseburger.

First of all, where did cheeseburgers come from? According to a Google search, the cheeseburger originated in Pasadena, California, in 1926, when Lionel Sternberger, who worked in his dad’s sandwich shop, dropped a slice on cheese on a hamburger patty, and put that between two slices of bread…and now we know where the ‘burger’ part of the name came from, as well. Louisville, Kentucky claims that the cheeseburger was invented at Kaelin’s Reataurant, in 1934. Denver, Colorado lays claim to the invention , in 1935, at a place called the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In. Furthermore, these folks will show you a a trademark and a court order, if you ask. Even Athens, Texas, gets in on the fray about the invention of the burger…but Athens claims the first Hamburger, by Uncle Fletcher Davis, who had a little cafe on the courthouse square…but Davis held the cheese.

Speaking of Texas, the city of Corpus Christi is the home of Whataburger, known for its cheeseburgers. The first Whataburger hamburger/cheeseburger stand was opened in 1950 by Harmon Dobson, who put his creation on a five-inch bun…causing him to exclaim “What a burger!” Now there’s about 850 Whataburger stores across Texas, with one on the Arkansas side of Texarkana.

Speaking of Texarkana: several years ago, the Twin Cities professed that Texarkana sold more hamburgers or hamburger meals, per capita, than other towns of its size. Our friend Nita Fran Hutcheson even helped put together a Hamburger/Cheeseburger festival, downtown in front of the Perot Theatre. No doubt, we love our cheeseburgers around here.
