Country music artists are some of the best, when it comes to covering, or re-recording a classic, well-known song.  Such is the case with one an old friend co-wrote.

Recently, Sandy Pinkard, singer/songwriter/actor/comedian with friend Richard Bowden as Pinkard and Bowden, proudly emailed me to inform me that “I Can Tell By the Way You Dance”, has been re-recorded and released by Josh Turner.  The album, ‘Country State of Mind’, is all about the songs that inspired and influenced Turner. Here he is, in his own words.

Back to Sandy Pinkard, though. I wondered what was the background story on him writing the song. Sandy responded:

Texas honky tonks on the North Side of Fort Worth where I lived above THE WHITE ELEPHANT SALOON. The area before it was turned into gift shops was full of bars with every one featuring twin fiddle combos. I saw a woman after working the COWTOWN RODEO and based on her dancing I knew I could sleep with her. Mentioned it to my writing partner Robb Strandlund and the song was completed in an hour.
So here is the Number One hit, released in March of 1984, from the album, “There Is a Season”.

Even country great Gary Morris had a release on “I Can Tell By the Way You Dance”, back in the day. His didn’t hit as big as The Voice (not the tv show, Vern Gosdin’s nickname) did.

So, I put it to you: Which version do you like the most, and why?

Regardless, I’m hoping that my friend sees some mailbox money from the re-release.
