Today is Friday the 13th. It is also National Jewel Day.

National Jewel Day is all about those who make jewelry, those who market jewelry, and especially those breathtaking pieces that have been handed down for generations in our families, or even a piece that has been given to us, by someone special.

National Jewel Day covers both precious and semi-precious stones. It’s all a matter of personal taste. Jewelers exist to make sure that we get the finest quality of stones, too. According to the

National Day Calendar

Jewelers offer a wide variety of gemstones. They provide their customers with custom designs and often help craft one-of-a-kind pieces. Selecting from precious and semi-precious stones takes time. Most jewelers collaborate with artisans who work with clients to bring their vision to life. They also repair and clean heirloom pieces, too.

Probably the most common of jewels or stones given, are birthstones. There are 12 stones, for the 12 months. The stones are:

    • January – Garnet
    • February – Amethyst
    • March – Aquamarine
    • April – Diamond
    • May – Emerald
    • June – Pearl
    • July – Ruby
    • August – Peridot
    • September – Sapphire
    • October – Opal
    • November – Yellow Topaz, Citrine
  • December – Tanzanite, Zircon, Blue Topaz (and sometimes turquoise)
  • How do we celebrate National Jewelry Day? By bringing out that heirloom bauble and wearing it. Tell the kids the story behind it. Learn to make your own jewelry, by signing up for a DIY class. Or even wear your birthstone, or a birthstone of your children, grandkids, or spouse.
