Our Money Has Gone Bats

Have you checked out what’s in your pocket or purse lately? The year 2020 has brought us a surprise or two, in our US currency.

Getting some prescriptions filled at the pharmacy earlier this week, the pharmacy tech ringing me up was giving me my change, when she looked down at her hand. “Um, what IS this? Is this a bat on this quarter?”

I looked. Yes. It was a bat, with a bat baby, too. “Well, that’s a new one on me. Shoot, we still collect the State Quarters at our house.”

So, I came back to work, and looked it up, of course.

According to the U.S. Mint, some new quarters are being released, beginning this year. However, this is nothing new. The America the Beautiful Quarters have been around since 2010, Hot Springs National Park was the first one issued that year. There are 56 America the Beautiful Quarters, in all, to be issued, now through early 2021.

Well, go figure. When did I miss this program? Could it be that I am more interested in spending my quarters than looking at them and saving them? Quite possibly.

Looking at this particular quarter, George Washington appears to have received a face-lift. And the fruit bats are kind of cute.

We might as well have a closer look at our pocket change from now on before we spend it. You might get a little smile out of it.
