Are you having a difficult time remembering what day it is? It’s happening right now, in many homes. Our regular schedules are disrupted entirely. So don’t feel badly for  forgetting that this Sunday is Palm Sunday. Sadly, we forgot, as well.

Palm Sunday is important for those of the Christian faith. This is the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem, and palm branches were laid in His path into the city. Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, leading up to His Crucifixion and His rising from the tomb after three days, ascending into Heaven.

From childhood through adulthood, Palm Sunday has been that day we attend church and we are given a palm frond to hold or wave during the morning service. Our children of the  church body will line up and parade through the sanctuary, waving palms as we sing the opening hymn. This is a wonderful moment of praise and joy…which is good, because, we know what is coming, come next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

This year beats any experience through which many of us have lived, including tornadoes, ice storms, and other natural disasters. We had absolutely no idea that COVID-19 existed, until the beginning of 2020, really. This moment in time is a true game-changer. We are attending church online or on television. How can we possibly celebrate Palm Sunday, then?

A group called   The Missionaries of the Holy Spirit

have posted this on their Facebook page:

What if everyone on Sunday April 5 in the morning, puts a branch on the door of their house or on the window, to celebrate Palm Sunday?

It could be any green branch you can get. This would help, despite the social distancing, to be connected as we enter into the Holiest of Weeks.

Want to join?

We may be physically isolated, but not separated. We are united as the body of Christ.

We are the Church.

So. Let’s celebrate this Palm Sunday, together. Put a little bit of greenery on your door. And feel the joy of the day.
