Presidents’ Day Our Way

Monday, February 17th is Presidents’ Day in the USA. It’s more than a federal day off, to me.

Congress created the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved several holidays to be observed on Mondays, throughout the year. Since February includes Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 12th and George Washington’s birthday on February 22nd, Presidents’ Day occurs on the Monday between the 15th and 21st of the month each year. It is NEVER on Washington’s birthday. Also, Presidents’ Day is to honor ALL of our Presidents, not just Washington and Lincoln.

Over the long holiday weekend, you’ll see lots of ads for Presidents’ Day sales, at many retailers. And that is just fine. My business relies upon retailers and their sales. I don’t have a problem with that.

One of my favorite observances locally for Presidents’ Day, and all of our federal holidays are all of the flags that are distributed throughout the community. I am thankful to the Rotary Club of Texarkana, for spearheading this effort. That means that we have flags posted in front of the radio station, several times a year. My gratitude goes to the Rotary Club and those individuals who go all over, placing Old Glory. Having flags placed at your business, school, or residence is easy. Just contact a member of the Rotary Club. For a donation, they can get you on the list for flag displays.

Happy Presidents’ Day, from me to you.
