This Is National Telecommunicators Week

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is this week, April 12th through 18th. Our hardworking dispatchers and public safety telecommunicators serve as a vital link between the community and fire, medical, and law enforcement agencies.

This week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

Most localities have postponed or cancelled any kind of celebration. However, there is nothing wrong with us celebrating our area dispatchers ourselves.

A suggestion: We know that the Bi-State dispatchers work long, 12-hour shifts. After having toured and observed the dispatch center, we learned that the dispatchers love cookies and snacks. Why not show them appreciation by sending some treats, or pizza to those who are the first line of assistance? Or, have your children write letters or draw a thank-you picture? Send to the Bi-State Justice Center Dispatchers, 100 North State Line, Texarkana, TX 75501. Let us know what you do for them. They will appreciate being remembered.
