Community Unity UPDATE

The Community Unity project began in March, when the pandemic was starting to affect our area elderly in Texarkana, and surrounding communities, with little to no food, water, and supplies at home. It’s five months later…and those care packages are STILL being delivered.

President and co-founder Suki O’Neal of Friends For a Cause, a non-profit 501-c-3 organization, is still soliciting assistance for our area seniors in need.  She explains:

In an effort to be a part of the solution and not the problem, Texarkana AMI Radio station, Retreat Home Health Care, and Friends for a Cause, a local 501C3 nonprofit, banded together in an effort to collect supplies in a safe and efficient manner for seniors citizens in need. We have delivered over 500 care packages within Bowie, Cass, Hempstead, Little River, and Miller Counties.

We are still looking for businesses and/or individuals that can donate specific supplies to build emergency care packages that will last anywhere from 3-4 days to possibly a week if needed. The goal is finding and serving seniors who physically cannot get out of their house or have no one to shop for them due to COVID.

Supplies needed:
Bags (paper or plastic)
Bottled water (any size)
Paper goods (Toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex)
Canned foods (pop top preferably)
Crackers/pasta/dry foods/goods
Hand sanitizer/soap

*We have previously partnered with Harvest Texarkana and Flower Acres Baptist Church to get food supplies so we will be delivering care packages to their people as well as them supplying food to others in need. Wal-Mart on both Texas and Arkansas as well as Sam’s Club and Albertsons in Wake Village have also jumped on board with us to donate supplies and help stretch the donated dollar.

There are some drop-off points, for those who would like to donate any of the requested supplies. Those include: AMI Radio/KPGG 103.9 & 98.5/KEWL 95.1, at 1323 College Drive in Texarkana, during regular business hours…and Retreat Health Care Services, at 4321 McKnight Road, in Texarkana.

O’Neal goes on to explain what constitutes an eligible senior.

*We will be delivering to ANYONE in the Texarkana and surrounding areas north, east, south and west within a 45-mile radius.
*Please call 903-793-0282 or email suki@retreatatkenwood.com to add your
family/friend/loved one to our care package delivery list.

*In order to maximize safety and peace of mind for the seniors, only the members of the
nonprofit and the home health office will deliver AFTER we have contacted the recipient to schedule their delivery. That ensures they know we are coming and can look for the package once dropped if it’s left somewhere for them. It decreases confusion and allows us to sanitize where necessary.

If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can do so by cash or check made out to the Friends for a Cause Foundation. Mail or drop off at 4321 McKnight Rd, Texarkana Texas 75503. Credit card or PayPal to ffacfoundation2014@gmail.com Notate as: ‘2020
