How to Test Your Doggy’s DNA

I’m sure you have seen all the Ads on TV about finding out about your heritage and ancestry via your DNA. There are many companies now who claim to be able to find out all kinds of information about you and your genetic background via a simple home test. I have done one myself and was disappointed to find out I had the same amount of Native American DNA as Elizabeth Warren.

But did you know you can also now get your Dog’s DNA tested? This is no joke. My son did it for his dog. He was so impressed with the results that for Christmas he also got me a kit to test my dog.  Well, I got back my dog JAX’s results the other day.  I was amazed at how much detail there was in the DNA report.  I think there was more information about my dog than I got with my human DNA report on myself.

I won’t give you all the details from Wisdom Panel but here is some of the information my Doggie DNA found for JAX.  50% of JAX is a mixture of Terrier and Herding Groups.  His more specific breakdown includes 12.5% Chihuahua, 12.5% Wirehaired Dachshund, 12.5% English Springer Spaniel, and 12.5% Toy Fox Terrier.  Some of this I can see in him.  Some seemed a surprise.  But hey, it’s science, right?  Who am I to argue with DNA…even if it is Doggie DNA.

What about you?  Would you spend money to have your dog’s DNA tested?  Would you believe the results?  Do you think this is a great idea?  Or just another way to get your money out of your wallet?  What’s next?  Cat DNA?  I bet you can find that too…haha.  Let me know what you think about all this genetic testing we can do today.  Have we gone too far?  Or is this just the beginning of everyone and everything being tested?
