Hole in my Roof

I am a wiser man today.  How?  By having a HOLE in my roof.  A strange thing to say right?  But the other day while sitting in my living room I heard a strange sound.  The dogs heard it too and started to barking.  So I got up and walked into the other room to see what the sound was coming from.

To my shock, I saw the wood-burning stove pipe in the kitchen starting to fall through the hole in the ceiling.  Now let me stop and explain that when I moved into this house there was not a wood-burning stove.

The previous owners took it with them.  All that was left as a big pipe going into the ceiling and out the roof.  I planned on eventually getting another stove to fit in that area.  But since I’m the President of the Procrastinators, I had not gotten one yet.

Well, if anyone had explained how I needed one to keep that pipe from falling down…I might have gotten one much sooner.

Anyway, I caught the falling pipe and then called my local friendly chimney people.  They said they could come the next day to check things out.  Which would be great.  Except for the fact that very night a thunderstorm came rolling through.

Without the inside pipe attached to the one on the roof, the wind just blew over the one on the roof.  Leaving a Large Open Hole for all the rain to come down into my house.

So what have I learned that you need to know?  If you ever get a house with a pipe that used to attach to a wood-burning stove.  Don’t procrastinate.  Replace the stove asap.  Otherwise, you might learn a lesson just like I did.
