May 5th is Cinco de Mayo. To the surprise of many, it is NOT the date of Mexican Independence. It is the date that celebrates a military victory that Mexico had over invading forces from France in 1862. So it is true that it is a day that Mexico can take pride in. Even though it seems that Cinco de Mayo is actually more popular in America than in Mexico.
