In this part of the country gardening does not stop in the fall.
The Bowie County Master Gardeners and Texas A&M-Texarkana’s Extended Education and
Community Development Department have been hosting FREE monthly garden-related
seminars for the public this year. The Fall lineup has been announced and will be as follows.
Classes are held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Room 326 of the Texas A&M Texarkana
University Building. No reservation is required to attend. A Q&A session will follow each
presentation.Monday, August 14 – Fall Garden Options. Spring gardening is probably the most popular type
of gardening in the area, but with a little planning, Fall Gardening can be very rewarding. It may
be hot when you plant the seeds but come harvest time there should be a hint of cool in the air.
Get your plants in at the right time to harvest your crop before frost.Monday, September 11 – Fruits and Berries. Fall is a great time to consider adding some
perennial food crops to your garden and landscape. You can start to plant containerized trees in
the fall and continue planting bare-root trees into late winter. Learn about types of fruits/berries
that perform reliably in our area and how to get them started growing.Monday, October 9 – Making and Using Compost. Compost is almost always the correct answer
to many garden problems. Need to reduce weeds, add compost. Need to conserve water in the
soil, incorporate compost. Leaves will be falling soon and fallen leaves are great starter
materials to make excellent compost at home.Monday, November 13 – Importance of Bees to Man. Learn about how honeybees play a role in
pollinating many of the vegetable and fruit crops that we like to grow and eat. This program will
be an overview of keeping honeybees – what you need to consider if adding a bee hive or two is
on your mind in the near future. For more information, call the Bowie County Extension Office at 903.628.6702.
