The Texas High Tigers are preparing for their trip South to take on the highly touted Lufkin Panthers.

It’s like the good ole days. Long ago, back when I was a youngster these two teams were in the same District. There was an annual game between the two. Now we get to relive some of that old glory this Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium.

Texas High comes in on a hot streak having won their last three games in a row, including a rout of West Mesquite to end the regular season last week. Tiger Head Football Coach Gerry Stanford likes what he sees in his team that never gave up. “Really proud of our Seniors leadership and out teams effort late in the season.”

The week has gotten off to a good start on the practice field for the Tigers. Stanford adds, “It’s going well and it’s great to be playing this time of year.”

As for Lufkin, their only loss this year was to the unbeaten powerhouse Longview Lobos by just three points. Coach Stanford describes the Panthers as, “Really good ball club, tremendous defense, very explosive offense.”

It won’t be easy, but nothing worth it ever is. This Texas High Tiger team has been playing on the edge, like it’s the playoffs for the last month. Don’t expect them to be intimidated by the Panthers. Texas High could surprise a lot of folks come Friday night.

Coach Stanford puts it this way for his athletes ready to tee it up. “Enjoy the moment and play with great effort.”

Knowing their coach, you realize that is exactly what these Tigers will do.
