The Current War

Last Saturday I rented and watched the movie “The Current War”. It’s a movie based on the history of the battle between DC and AC electricity and Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. They even throw in Nikola Tesla. But I think his story and character got short-changed in the film. Still, it was an interesting watch that I recommend you see also.

It’s hard to imagine that just a few years ago most of America did not even have electric lights. Much less all the other things we now power with electricity. I was reminded of how much we depend on electric power when Easter Sunday at about 7 pm I lost my power during a storm.

The power stayed off so long that I lost everything in my refrigerator and freezer. Plus, at night my only entertainment was the flickering of the candlelight on the ceiling of my living room. It was very quiet too.

I missed my TV and lights. But there was a strange calmness to having to shut down what I did when the sun went down. Maybe electricity is overrated? What do you think? Could you live without it? Like people did just about 100 years ago?
