Lessons From My Grandpa ‘Can the circle be unbroken’

One Sunday I wasn’t very light-hearted about getting up and going to church. My grandpa shushed my mum and grandma up indicating that he wanted me to ride to church with him. I was scared spitless. I hoped that there was a clause or verse in the bible that said it was a sin to spank your granddaughter on Sunday. I knew not to cause any more fussing and quietly got into his green pickup. He popped in an 8-track and adjusted the volume as The Carter Family’s “Can the circle be unbroken” played. He said nothing just let the song play and drove towards our church. When the song was over, my grandfather turned the music down and offered me his wisdom.

“Life isn’t easy. We do a lot of things that are hard on our spirit and body. If we are really lucky we find a group of people that help share the heavy load the world puts on our shoulders, for your grandma and mum its church. You come from a great line of people who have carved a place for themselves and their families. You, my Lil Sweetpea are so very lucky to be loved so much. Do your part to keep the circle unbroken.”
