Yes. World Otter Day really is a ‘thing’.

Other than being some of the cutest little guys on the planet, the otter is considered good indicators for the environment. After all, otters don’t live in unclean, polluted areas…so when you see otters on your property, or near a creek or river? You are in a nice, clean setting.

The International Otter Survival Fund is concerned with otter preservation.

12 of the 13 species worldwide are declining because of
hunting for the illegal fur trade, habitat destruction,
reduction in available prey, and road deaths.

Otters are really cute and fun to observe…but be careful. Otters are in the same family that includes weasels, badgers, honey badgers, martens, minks, polecats, and wolverines. If otters feel threatened, they will go on the attack. They will bite, and use their tails for self-defense. However, otters have many positives going for them. You can read all about them in this article from Mental Floss.

Happy World Otter Day!
