If it were up to me, we would celebrate fresh breath every day, but according to our events calendar, National Fresh Breath Day is August 6th. The day urges appreciation of oral hygiene and its importance. And I think we can all agree, minty fresh breath blowing our way beats the heck out of the alternative.

Bad breath doesn’t just happen overnight (ok, bad breath does usually happen overnight, but you know what I’m saying), it’s likely a symptom of other things, like food stuck in your teeth, strong-smelling foods (garlic and onions), poor dental care or a side effect of medication.

Have no fear, we have a few tips to give you breath as sweet as your momma’s fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.

First and foremost- BRUSH YOUR TEETH!

We all know how important it is to brush (especially after meals), but did you know you might be doing it incorrectly?

Floss once a day, preferably before bedtime.

Tooth decay and gum disease can develop when plaque is allowed to build up on teeth and along the gum line. Cleaning between teeth removes plaque that can lead to cavities or gum disease from the areas where a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing isn’t fun, but I do enjoy having teeth… so there is that.

A mouthwash or rinse does not replace a regular oral hygiene routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing. The main function of most mouthwashes is to freshen breath. If you want to make your mouthwash do double duty, get one that includes fluoride.

Sugar-free gum is your friend!

Carry sugar-free gum. When you take out a piece, offer one to your companions. Those with bad breath won’t know you’re giving them a hint; they’ll think you’re being polite and sharing! #SharingIsCaring

Dry mouth bad. Saliva good. Dry mouth can be caused by medications, certain medical conditions, alcohol use, tobacco use or excessive caffeine. To combat dry mouth, drink lots and lots of saliva producing water.  Water/saliva (if I have to type saliva one more time, I’m going to lose it) rinses and removes unwanted leftovers from your mouth, helps break down food when you eat and provides disease-fighting substances to help prevent cavities and infections. Water is magic. Plain and simple.

It’s #NationalFreshBreathDay so let’s get to celebrating!!
