We want to thank these exemplary Texarkana Texas Police Department officers and civilian support for rising to the challenge and surpassing the mark. We pause to remember Lt. Clay McClure and his family.

Officer Dustin Johnson was honored as the Officer of the Quarter

Officer Dustin Johnson was honored as the Officer of the Quarter. Chief Schutte said that he is among the “best of the best” and mentioned several recent examples of the exemplary way that he does his job. He said that, in response to an increase in vehicle burglaries in May, Dustin found a hidden path near the apartment complex that he believed the burglars were using to get in and out of the complex without anyone seeing them. He coordinated with the other officers on his shift and developed a preventive patrol plan, which ultimately led to the burglars’ arrest. In another example, Dustin stopped a vehicle on Hwy. 59 that led to the arrest of occupants and the discovery of 26 pounds of cocaine in the car. He also arrested five people after catching them breaking into cars in the Robin Lane area and his subsequent investigation led to the recovery of several items that had been reported stolen in a nearby town.

Jerry McIntire and Sara Thacker were recognized with the Civilian Award of Excellence. As a result of the ransomware attack on the City’s computer network in December, the entire electronic inventory of our property and evidence room was lost. The impact was immediately felt as evidence need by investigators or the courts had to be manually located. They started the tedious task of re-entering each of the over 16,000 individual pieces of evidence into the system in March. While it was estimated that it would take them about a year to get everything completed, but they managed to get it done in only four months. This could have not been done without their extraordinary efforts.

Chief Schutte also presented a retirement plaque to Lt. Clay McClure’s wife, Susan and their children, William and Noranda. He noted that, with more than 22 years of service, he was eligible to retire when he died and we wanted to recognize his accomplishment. In addition, Chief Schutte said, “We always let our officers keep their service weapons when they retire. This is the service weapon that Lt. McClure used to help keep Texarkana safe and we want to present it to his son, William.” He also gave the family a bag containing the many remembrance letters and condolence cards that we have received from around the country, and Chaplain Tommy Gaither gave them Bibles.
